Becoming known as one of the most popular reenactment events in NY State, the Battle of Lain’s Mill, hosted by the 21st Georgia Volunteer Infantry Unit, offers a beautiful location on 600 acres of farmland with gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. For both reenactors and spectators alike, it is, without a doubt, the perfect location to pass some time.
Battle of Lain’s Mill Education Day – Friday May 31st, 2024
The annual Battle of Lain’s Mill Education Day is dedicated to teaching the youth of today about one of the most important times in our nation’s history. The 21st Georgia, along with over 60 reenactors and other volunteers, hosts more than 500 school children, grades 2 through 8. From 9am till 1:30pm, these students and their teachers rotate through 20 minute stations manned by highly skilled volunteer Civil War reenactors and learn about all aspects of the Civil War and life during the 1860’s. Determined by the skills and interest of our volunteers, the topics covered include artillery, cavalry, Civil War drill, Civil War medicine, soldier’s food, ladies clothing of the period, Civil War music, Civil War baseball and games, blacksmithing, and so much more. The hands-on exhibits and demonstrations stimulate interest, so the students are better able to understand and retain the information that is part of their core curriculum and so much a part of our nation’s history.

From the North: Take Rt. 36 south through Hornell towards Canisteo, Approx. 2.5 mi. turn left on Magee Rd. (Belle Haven exit), travel 0.7 mi., turn right on Canisteo/Hornell Backroad, travel 0.2 mi. turn left on Lain Rd., travel 0.5 mi. to event site, follow signs.
From the South: Take Rt. 36 north through Canisteo towards Hornell, Approx 1.0 mi. outside of Canisteo turn right on Magee Rd. (Belle Haven exit), travel 0.7 mi. turn right on Canisteo/Hornell Backroad, travel 0.2 mi. turn left on Lain Rd., travel 0.5 mi. to event site, follow signs.
