The Hospital Dept. of the 21st Georgia portrays military
medicine as it was practiced by Confederate surgeons and
medical personnel during the Civil War. Our primary
functions include participation in living history presentations
on American Civil War battlefields and medical reenactments
of actual surgeries which were performed during the Civil War.
These include upper and lower limb amputations and Civil War neurosurgery for head traumas with members of our regiment serving as the patients. Additional scenarios include demonstration of anesthesia use with our surgical procedures, medical inspection of the unit and sick call of our troops to care for common medical ailments of the time. During hot weather battle reenactments, the members of the Hospital Dept. serve a key role by accompanying our soldiers on the field and distributing ice as needed to help them avoid overheating.
